Dear Parents and Carers,
Well we are back to “normal” whatever that means for us at St Gabriel’s. It is hard to remember what that is. We are still very mindful of keeping the students and staff safe as the return to school continues. Only essential services are permitted to come on site with proof of vaccination. Parents can bring students to the classroom door in the mornings but are asked to leave as soon as possible after that and not to congregate together on the school property. School is a place where the majority of the population i.e. school children, are not vaccinated. So far we have been very fortunate, however, with the increasing number of cases developing in the Latrobe City we need to be particularly vigilant. Please do not send your child to school if they are not feeling well.
As students return to school we are seeing lots of “variations on a theme” with regards to school uniform, including hair colour. Hair should be natural colours only please. Hopefully by next week all uniforms will have been found, dusted off and in some cases, hems let down, due to the growth spurts of some of our students!
We look forward to the remainder of the year working in partnership with you all.
Warm Regards
Ros
Roslyn Joyner

SPORTS NEWS
School Sport Newsletter: Friday 29th October
School Sport Victoria Update
I have received the following information regarding all District/Division/Region Competitions from SSV website and that is all interschool sport has been cancelled for the remainder of the year. The SSV is encouraging schools to conduct their own sporting event to maximise school and student participation in school sport. Any school sporting event would need to be conducted in line with advice from DET Schools Operations Guide and community sport guidance. SSV respects schools who make the decision to not participate, wanting students to settle back into school and reconnect with their friends .
Parents are able to access the SSV website for the status of all events held in Victoria at www.ssv.vic.edu.au
Jump Rope for Heart - (Fund raising Activity)
Again I would like to congratulate Our school on raising $9,488.00 dollars for the National Heart Foundation. The students who raised funds for this program will receive their awards within the next two weeks. Mr Hogan will distribute these to the appropriate students when they arrive. Finally I would like to thank the following students for running a skipping exhibition at school . The students performed a skipping routine to music including a few special tricks of their own. Congratulations on a wonderful exhibition: Haylee Crookes, Isabella Vitale, Abbey Vella, Ruby Kurrle, Lara Landels, Emma Farley, Lacey Smith, Iris Knowles, Olivia Kavidis, Heidi Gardiner, Xavier Giblet, Emily Reddick, Hayley Aarons and Hayley Collins.
Schools Sporting Grant - Lacrosse Postponed to term 4
This term St Gabriel’s were successful in receiving Government funding from the schools sporting grant. However due to COVID restrictions this event will now take place next term. The students will be coached by adults in the game of Lacrosse. Lacrosse is a team game in which a ball is passed between teammates using a stick with a mesh or net at one end. It originates in Native American communities where it was used as a training ground for tribal warriors and dates back almost a thousand years. The students will learn the skills of the game and participate in a modified game during their physical education lessons. Please ask your children at home what they learnt about the game of Lacrosse.
Prep - 2 School Swimming Program
The School Swimming Program for the students in Grade Prep, One and Two has been cancelled also for the remainder of the year. The Ford Swim Centre apologizes for any inconvenience it may have caused but due to COVID restrictions they could not reschedule our swimming program this year.
Finally I would like to thank our school community for your understanding of another very frustrating year in sport. And here’s hoping for a better year in 2022 where we will see students involved in playing competitive sport at a District, Divisional, Regional and State level.

St Michael’s Parish warmly invites anyone interested in discovering more about the Catholic faith to attend our meetings on Thursdays, in St Michael’s Parish Centre. We start at 7.30pm sharp, and finish by 9.00pm sharp. This year’s starting date is July 22nd. IF YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO MAY BE INTERESTED, ENCOURAGE THEM TO CONTACT EITHER Susan Grout (0412 671 308) or the Parish Office (5174 2060). We need to know who is coming for COVID regulations.
Signing children in and out of school
If your child needs to leave early, or has an appointment, then parents must sign in when they return/arrive. A note must be supplied to the classroom teacher so that they are aware of why the child is leaving and they can then record the absence. If your child is unwell to speed up their recovery by not allowing your child to return to school until they are fully recovered.

St Gabriel’s Parents and Friends Committee – We Need You!!!
At St Gabriel’s Primary School, we are very fortunate to have a positive and dedicated group of parents who work side by side with the school and the school board to achieve the best possible environment and learning outcomes for our children. Whilst we represent the interests of the collective parent body, we strive to bring the school community together through organising fun activities for the students and families to engage in, while raising funds for the school.
This involves organizing and coordinating events such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, special food days, icy pole days, hot cross bun drives, school disco, parent’s social nights, just to name a few. The money raised is dispensed back into the school for things like play grounds, sensory gardens, technology, books, equipment, whatever the school needs to enhance every student’s school experience at St Gabriel’s.
We understand the global pandemic has really affected our school community. Sadly, a lot of us don’t know the other parents and carers as we haven’t been able to meet each other at school, attend on-site fundraising events or have friendly chats while we wait for our children at the gate. However, the show must go on and we still need a parent’s and friends committee for 2021/2022.
Unfortunately, some of the current committee members are nearing the end of their St Gabriel’s journey with their children moving up to secondary school within the next year or two. As such, we need to hand over the reins! Without new members, the committee cannot operate meaning the children will sadly miss out. Should you wish to join, you will be strongly supported and well guided through the process which will see you become a confident committee member. And what a great way to meet each other!
We meet at 7.00pm on the second Tuesday of each month (excluding school and public holidays). Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is ordinarily held in August where we elect office bearers for the next 12 months. 2022 is looking to be a fantastic year with many events already pencilled in for our children to experience! As we haven’t been able to meet, our AGM will be in November this year at a venue yet to be decided.
All parents and community members are welcome! If you are interested in joining the P & F Committee or finding out what’s involved, please feel free to speak with anyone in the Administration Office so we can help make the connection.
Kind regards
Belinda Purcell
