Dear parents and carers,
As we come to the close of another term I would sincerely like to thank everyone for their efforts over the past ten weeks. The Covid situation in Victoria across this term has taken its toll on a lot of people including our school community. Your flexibility in swinging from remote learning to onsite learning back to remote and so on, as well as lockdown to no lockdown has required an enormous amount of resilience from everyone. Congratulations students, parents and staff on getting to the end of term 3!
I would like to inform you that Mrs Sally Darby has accepted the position of Principal at Lumen Christie School Churchill for 2022. We congratulate Sally and wish her well for this new adventure.
The scheduled professional development day on October 4th around the Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support has been postponed to a date to be advised in the future. This means that St Gabriel’s students will begin Term 4 on Monday October 4th. Hopefully it will be the whole school returning. Nothing is definite. I will keep you informed as news comes to me about this.
Please be patient as we negotiate what we can and cannot do for the remainder of the year. Swimming programs and excursions/incursions are still being planned. Should these not happen there will be a process for credits to be applied to accounts, as was the case last year. Let’s keep looking ahead with hope and positivity.
I wish you all a restful and refreshing break and encourage you all to enjoy special and happy times with your family.
Warm regards,
Ros
Roslyn Joyner

SPORTS NEWS
School Sport Newsletter: Thursday 16th September
School Sport Victoria Update
I have received the following information from the SSV website regarding State championships that the following State Championships have been cancelled for 2021, due to the limitations in completing the progression through to a State Championship during Term 4:
- Primary and Secondary State Track and Field Championships
- Primary Basketball, Cricket, Softball, Volleyball
I have received the following information regarding District/Division Competitions from SSV website also - Depending on advice that inter-school sport can resume, SSV encourages schools to conduct inter-school sport at Primary District Division levels to maximise school and student participation in school sport. Any inter-school sport would need to be conducted in line with advice from DET Schools Operations Guide and community sport guidance. Coordinators of Primary Districts and Secondary Divisions will need to meet with their member schools to ascertain what sports could go ahead. SSV respects schools who make the decision to not participate, wanting students to settle back into school and reconnect with their friends . As the Traralgon District Sport Coordinator I will be attending a Divisional Region Sports Zoom meeting this Thursday 16th September to discuss planning for District and Division events in term 4 and these events include: Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Hot shot Tennis, Bowls.
The District and Division events will be only possible in term 4 once the Public Health Department and the Department of Education and Training has given the clearance for these events to take place. Parents are able to access the SSV website for the status of all events held in Victoria at www.ssv.vic.edu.au
State Cross Country Championship - Cancelled
I would like to congratulate Dempsey Podmore and Sierra Colantuno on their outstanding achievement in Cross Country running this year. They were both to run in the State Cross Country Championship in Melbourne but due to current COVID restrictions this event has now been cancelled for this year.
Jump Rope for Heart - (Fund raising Activity)
I would like to congratulate our school community on participating in the Recent Jump Rope for Heart Program. The aim of the program is to get students physically active, whilst learning about the importance of healthy behaviours to look after their health and at the same time, they’ll give back to the community by raising funds to help save Australian hearts. Our school raised $9,488.00 dollars for this wonderful cause. The National Jump Rope Field Officer - Montana Tozer-Chahine wanted to pass on her congratulations to the school and she was amazed by how much money was raised by this school whilst in remote learning - “a very generous community” she said. The students who raised funds for this program will receive their awards during term 4. Montana said the awards will be posted to the school in two allotments. Mr Hogan will distribute these to the appropriate students when they arrive. Finally I would like to thank the following students for running a skipping exhibition at school . The students performed a skipping routine to music including a few special tricks of their own. Congratulations on a wonderful exhibition: Haylee Crookes, Isabella Vitale, Abbey Vella, Ruby Kurrle, Lara Landels, Emma Farley, Lacey Smith, Iris Knowles, Olivia Kavidis, Heidi Gardiner, Xavier Giblet, Emily Reddick, Hayley Aarons and Hayley Collins.
Schools Sporting Grant - Lacrosse Postponed to term 4
This term St Gabriel’s were successful in receiving Government funding from the schools sporting grant. However due to COVID restrictions this event will now take place next term. The students will be coached by adults in the game of Lacrosse. Lacrosse is a team game in which a ball is passed between teammates using a stick with a mesh or net at one end. It originates in Native American communities where it was used as a training ground for tribal warriors and dates back almost a thousand years. The students will learn the skills of the game and participate in a modified game during their physical education lessons. Please ask your children at home what they learnt about the game of Lacrosse.
Prep - 2 School Swimming Program
The School Swimming Program for the students in Grade Prep, One and Two will be held in Term 4 commencing on Monday 18th of October and will conclude on Friday 29th October. The students will not swim on Thursday 21st and 28th of October. Students will receive a notice detailing the swimming program, a survey form and permission notice to be completed before attending this program. The students will receive this notification on the first day of term 4. The swimming program will be held at the Ford Swimming Centre.
AFL Grand Final
I would like to wish all our supporters of the Bulldogs Football Club and the Demons Football Club the very best as these two contest the AFL Grand Final on September 25th in Western Australia. Both teams are worthy of winning the premiership this season as they have had an outstanding season.
